A fashion photographer's wife discovers her husband’s affair with a top model and vanishes overnight. Desperate, Shen Xiao, played by the great actor Ge You («Farewell My Concubine»), slowly descends into madness. While searching for her by car, he finds one of her scarves. From that moment on, Shen is plagued by visions and violent fantasies that convince him his wife has been murdered. Things only get worse when he begins to see her ghost everywhere. That’s when he meets a seductive woman who claims to be a psychiatrist and offers to guide him into the depths of madness. In mainland China, strict censorship remains in place regarding horror and ghostly apparitions in cinema. To bypass this restriction, Suffocation takes the approach of a psychological thriller, gradually shifting its sophisticated aesthetics towards surrealism and a kind of visual insanity.
