Sara, a young student from the small town of Hellestad, has chosen for her essay topic the legend that has terrified this peaceful Swedish village for over a century. Titled "The Drowning Ghost," the legend tells the story of a local farmer who one morning took his scythe to the village and sliced three schoolchildren into thin pieces. Having fulfilled his fate as a serial killer, the farmer then drowned himself in the nearby lake and has since returned to haunt the village year after year. Sara's morbid curiosity soon brings old demons back to the surface. A stylish yet brutally effective slasher, Drowning Ghost is the latest entry in this new wave of Swedish genre cinema, which, from Evil to The Invisible, has been producing some of the best horror films in Europe.
