A man and a woman are making love in black and white, as they listen to Haendl, while in the room next door, their little boy accidentally falls out of the window. This prologue opens the way for a tragedy in a hostile environment : nature. The couple actually withdraws to a forest to mourn their son. Psychiatrist by trade, the man talks his wife into facing her own fears in order to overcome them. But it is impossible for her to get over her guilt and reason will vanish from this nature turned into a purgatory. Only suffering can allow an expiation of this (original) sin. Even though redemption is not part of the program. Before, a fox had fortold what was going to happen : « Chaos reigns ! ». Once again, Lars von Trier brings back on the screen his desperate conception of humanity, with a disconcerting mastery and a devastating imaginary world which never stop being present from one film to another. We have all understood that we are the antichrist. We just have to resign ourselves to it…..
