In an attempt to save their faltering relationship, Raúl and Ana decide to spend the Christmas holiday with their son in a remote cabin in the middle of a snowbound forest. Samuel, one of the inhabitants of a nearby village, regularly comes to do work around the house and strikes up a friendship with Ana and the child. Increasingly exasperated by the intrusion of this other man into their life, and feeling that his marriage is falling apart and that his son is avoiding him, Raúl becomes more and more jealous. All around him, in a mixture of dreams, hallucinations and real occurrences, a series of mysterious and troubling events ensues... A psychological thriller with an oppressive mood, The Path offers its fair share of dark and disturbing images. The tension is gradually built up and the uneasiness of the protagonist becomes increasingly clear as the film progresses. In his first feature-length production, Toledo succeeds in telling a dark and mysterious tale. He makes use of the soundtrack and clever lighting to create the kind of heavy and absorbing atmosphere we have seen in numerous other recent Spanish films.
