In 1974, the Maynard family move to what is supposed to be their new home sweet home. Dad Len is pleased with his purchase and his wife Jenny, the perfect housewife, loves to keep the house clean and cosy. In contrast, their daughter Sally is annoyed to have been forced to leave her friends behind and shows her anger through her bad moods. In fact, when they are disturbed by noises coming from her room at night, Len and Jenny quickly accuse her of trying to ruin their new life. But more and more strange events occur in the house. A malevolent being is living in the house and the poltergeist’s attention seems dangerously focused on poor Sally... When the Lights Went out is a very personal project for Pat Holden. The film is actually based on real-life events involving his own mother! Haunted by this ghost story since his childhood, the director exorcises his demons and, in doing so, creates a successful horror film with shivers guaranteed.
