In a small American mountain village, live the Parkers, a simple family known for their discretion. But behind closed doors and fearful silences lies a terrible secret upon which local authorities will slowly begin to shed some light. During a thunderstorm, in a darkened house run by a tyrannical patriarch, the protagonists move about in a bleak atmosphere that pulls one into a hellish, modern, fairy tale. A complex, well-crafted, plot that leaves you guessing until the final frame and talented actors brilliantly playing fully drawn characters in a disturbingly morbid atmosphere are what make We Are What We Are (a remake of Mexican director Jorge Michel Grau’s Somos lo que hay) such a perfectly unwholesome and terrifying film. Even the most weathered horror fans will not emerge unscathed.
