When her father finds a new job in a decrepit Bavarian health resort, Gretchen has no choice but to move there with him, her stepmother, and her stepsister. The family is welcomed by the charismatic but unsettling owner who soon displays a disturbing interest in the youngest girl, who suffers from aphasia. To cap it all off, Gretchen starts having horrifying visions that hint at the place’s dark secrets. Reality comes undone in this horror thriller screened at the Berlinale, propelled by a powerhouse performance from Hunter Schafer.
Young Saxony-born director Tilman Singer delivers a sophomore feature that explores the possibilities of genre cinema. Luz, his capstone film project, was already a testament to his love for 80s-tinged euro-horror. Boasting splendid 16 mm cinematography and a spellbinding synth score, the film took him to Berlin, Fantasia, and Sitges. With Cuckoo, Singer does it again and cements his place among the rising stars of European genre cinema.
