Film
Upper Austria, 18th century. The recently married, pious Agnes (Anja Plaschg) moves to her husband’s small home village surrounded by woods. She quickly feels out of place in this harsh and isolated environment. As solitude shatters her faith completely, she soon finds herself on the threshold of insanity, and commits an irredeemably violent act…
Part superb, richly documented historical drama, part incredibly dark psychological thriller, Des Teufels Bad is the new film from Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, respectively the wife and nephew of provocative filmmaker Ulrich Seidl. Their first feature – the terrifying Ich seh Ich seh (2014) – was already quite the sensation and was selected for Best International Feature at the Oscars. Five years later, they released their first English-language film, the anxiety-inducing thriller The Lodge (NIFFF 2019), another exploration of themes related to motherhood. Their latest, an Austro-German coproduction, is poised to become a new must-see for horror fans.
