Film

On a stifling hot summer’s day, the Oslo region becomes the scene of unexplained atmospheric phenomena that bring the recently deceased back to life. Three families’ grieving process comes to a grinding halt when their close ones come back, undead. Handling The Undead subtly and darkly subverts the zombie genre to explore how the loss of a loved one can affect those who survive them.

Born in Norway in 1989, Thea Hvistendahl studies the audiovisual arts at the Westerdals School of Communication in Oslo. In 2013, she started directing numerous short films and music videos. In 2018, her experimental concert film Adjø Montebello wins a Norwegian Film Award. Handling The Undead, her debut fiction feature, makes a splash at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, propelling Thea Hvistendahl onto the global stage as an heir to the long tradition of Scandinavian genre cinema.
